TRA’S R & D ACHIEVEMENTS
Production Division :
-
Standardization of Nutrient Management
-
Application of machinery in field practices
-
Biodegradable jute textiles for soil conservation
-
Establishment of the limits of chemical residues and heavy metals
Plant Improvement Division :
-
Development and release of high yielding diploid and triploid clones and biclonal seed stocks for Assam, Dooars and Darjeeling.
-
Identification of tissue cultured somaclones with high yield as well as quality.
-
Identification of Physiological parameters influencing drought resistance for development of superior planting material.
-
Development of tissue culture techniques for regeneration of shade tree plantlets from Albizzia odoratissima and A. chinensis.
-
Determination of endogenous hormones quantifid and effect of exogenous application on yield.
-
DNA fingerprinting carried out using RAPD Techniques in TV clones. These are being registered with National Bureau of Plant Genetics, New Delhi to protect their indentity. The fingerprinting work has been extended to other molecular techniques such as ISSR and AFLP. Genetic transformation studies were carried out where Ri plasmid of Agrobacterium rhizogenes was successfully transformed in tea shoots.
Plant Protection Division :
Entomology Department
-
Testing of new molecules for bio-efficacy against major pests.
-
Development of package of practices for Helopeltis and termite control
-
Evaluation of a number of phytochemicals, insect growth regulators and animal product and recommendations for IPM of major pests.
-
Generation of data on residues of seven pesticides in made tea from extensive supervised field trials.
Mycology and Microbiology Department :
-
Establishment of bio-efficacy of Trichoderma and recommendations for use against root and stem diseases of tea – this effectively brought down the rehabilitation period after uprooting to one year.
-
Establishment of the effectiveness of Bacillus subtilis and Beauveria bassiana for controlling leaf diseases and sucking pests of tea.
-
Development of bio-fertilizer formulation containing VAM and nitrogen fixer and made available to the member gardens for field evaluation.
Quality Division :
Tea Processing and Manufacture Advisory Department :
-
Introduction of split orthodox and modified CTC process with very encouraging results during monsoon months to improve tea quality.
-
Commercialisation of Electronic Monitoring and Control system for withering leading to energy savings and consistency in withering, cost effective withering through time and money saving.
Biochemistry Department :
-
Standardisation of biochemical constituents during processing with special reference to catechins and flavour.
-
Development of tea byproducts.
Service Division : Library, Planning & Information Technology :
-
Three projects on automation and database creation on hand.
