Tocklai library came into existence with the inception of scientific research in tea in 1900 when the books and journals were procured and retained in the concerned departments. But with the growth of the station, a central library was developed and finally housed in the main office building in 1947. The process of reorganization of the library was completed in 1948. Mr. J.N. Barthakur, an Assistant Bacteriologist, was posted as the first librarian.

The year 1957 saw further reorganization after a professional librarian was appointed. In 1958, a hall was constructed for use of the library. Indexing of books and journals and classification of books according to Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) system were introduced.

In 1962, Tocklai library was listed in IASLIC Directory of Special and Research Libraries in India. During late seventies, cataloguing, classification and other technical services were made systematic. 'Documentation List' and 'Bulletin of Documentation of Tea' having selected information on important research papers and abstracts appearing in various journals received in the library were compiled and circulated among the scientists of Tocklai. Computer at INSDOC, New Delhi, processed the holdings data of Tocklai and bibliographic database of publication on tea science was started.

A major reorganization of the library was carried out in the year 2000. The total floor space was doubled. The library was given an attractive look with a new layout. As a part of modernization of library and information services, Internet facilities have been installed recently. The process of computerisation of the library management system, the archival of the most valuable documents in CDs and other such activities have progressed significantly.

By now, the library has become one of the best special libraries in India. Its stock comprises books, journals and other technical literatures. At present the library holds more than 6500 books, 15000 bound volumes of scientific and research journals. Technical literature, bulletins, pamphlets, memoranda, annual reports of other research laboratories, conference proceedings, reprints, reviews, trade journals, maps etc. also form a part of the library holdings.

The library, rich in special and rare collections, renders its services to the scientists and technical personnel of the station. Research scholars, scientists, students and academician also visit the library not only from the state but also from other parts of the country and abroad.
